Top 10 Senior Portrait clothing tips for girls.

I have been photographing seniors for 5+ years now, so I feel I have the experience to coach girls on their wardrobe for their senior session. This is something I discuss with each and every client. While I can’t tell you what to wear, I can guide you on choices that will reflect who you are but make the most impact on your session. Clothing can and will make or break your photos. Presentation is everything. Some client’s will have already had their outfits picked before I even hold a consultation, but I will still advise.

10 ten tips for girl senior portrait outfits:

1. If you’re planning on wearing a dress for an outfit, wear shorts underneath for easy sitting and crouching poses. You want need to be dainty with positioning.

2. Bring props that express who you are. Props add and give the hands something to do.

3. Try on your outfits and stand in front of a mirror - try standing, sitting and crouching poses. How do you feel when you move in that outfit? Do things stick out that you don’t exposed or restrict movement. What you see in the mirror is probably what you will see in your photos. Looser clothing is more flattering than tight clothing. Do you feel confident?

4. COLOR. COLOR. COLOR. While white seems to be trendy. It’s also a wash out. Try adding bold colors (darker colors). Colors pop and we want you to pop, too. Try dark blues, like a navy, red, orange, purple, browns even my favorite, black. Try to avoid, white, light blue and neon colors.

5. Your outfit should complement the scenery. Nature - think about what season, find complementary colors for your background. Summer: red, pink, blue, green. Fall season: purple, Orange, burgundy, brown) Nature is flowing: steams, mountains, trees, gardens ,etc. Urban: straight and narrow, lines, edgy and bold.

6. Think about your footwear! I always recommend heels of some sort. They create nice lines through our legs, giving a longer look. They are fantastic for your crouching poses and they can make you feel more confident. But do bring shoes for walking, too. Shoes should always complement your outfit. Try to avoid flat shoes unless they are sneakers.

7. Dresses should fit your body type. Try an A-line cut dress or skirt. This gives a slimmer affect. Again, looser is more flattering than tight, always. Tight clothing accentuates the places we don’t want to focus on.

8. Add layers to one outfit by adding a jacket, cardigan, Shaw or vest. You can get many different looks by just adding one thing.

9. Iron and lint your clothing before your session. Clothing should not look like it just arrived from Amazon.

10. Think about how you will feel when you look back at your photos in 10, 20, 30 years. You don’t want to say, “OMG, what was I thinking!” Avoid trendy Logos and all logos altogether. Try to think timeless, but still be you.
